Chapter 25

Whether Shane Travers was a willing participant in this evening's attack or genuinely wanted to speak with Tony, and the shooter was there as a coincidence (which Ashley didn't buy), he would not find out until Travers was brought in for questioning. Of course, Ashley recognised the advantage presented by having one of the four boys in custody.

Travers would be there to answer questions about tonight's incident, but no one would be able to argue his right to question him about how it linked to Craig Chowdry's disappearance. Questioning Travers under caution inside a police interview room was vastly different to conducting the same interview anywhere else.

Inside the station there is far greater pressure and being under caution lent weight to the possibility of being arrested and incarcerated. Ashley needed the opportunity to quiz the group of suspects' weakest link and there might never be a better time.

Late in the evening, the roads were empty, and it took almost no time at all to get to Wingham, Ashley's brain barely registering the miles as he chewed over the latest development. Pulling into the station and parking around the back in the same space his car occupied yesterday, Ashley took a moment to message his fiancée, Tanya.

'Sorry, babe, I'm going to be late home tonight. Later than yesterday. The case is hotting up. Love you XX.'

He didn't expect an immediate response, but his phone started ringing before he could get out of the car. Ashley closed the door with him still inside and tapped on the button to connect the Facetime call.

"Babe."

The screen swam into focus to the sound of water moving: Tanya was in the bath. Ashley couldn't stop the broad grin that broke out on his face. Tanya was holding the phone with both hands above her face as she lay in the water. Ashley could see the steam rising from the surface.

"Working late again? What's the case?"

He sighed, "Ugh, babe, you know I can't talk about that stuff. It's always boring anyway."

"Only to you, Mr Police Officer." She liked to tease him and also liked to have him do police stuff in the bedroom which, to be perfectly honest, he was fine with. It's why she was employing her sultry voice and calling Ashley 'Mr Police Officer'. "You must be able to tell me something. Is it a murder?"

"Yes," he relented, then saw a need to correct himself. "Well, not officially."

She frowned, the expression pulling her eyebrows together.

Sceptically, she asked, "How can someone be murdered unofficially?"

"When there is no body," he replied in a macabre tone. "I really can't say anymore other than we think we know who did it and we are definitely making them nervous." They were making someone nervous, that was for certain.

"Oh, yeah, your partner. How's that going? Any better today?"

Ashley wasn't going to make her worry by revealing the truth of tonight's incident, so what was the right way to answer? His relationship with Tony wasn't any better. At least, Ashley didn't think it was.
